Program Description
Competence assessment can be accomplished through a variety of methods, including assessing information from current and previous employers, collecting peer feedback, verifying certification and licensure, reviewing results of a written or oral competency test, and observing skills. To meet The Joint Commission’s requirements, the assessment must be thorough and focus on the particular competency needs for each clinical staff member's assignment.
During this 60-minute activity the faculty discusses the components of objective, evidence-based methods to assess competence and to make recommendations for granting, denying, or renewing privileges for licensed independent practitioners. Additionally, the faculty reviews the six areas of General Competencies, Focused Professional Practice Evaluation, and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation.
Insights are provided into how The Joint Commission evaluates competency and credentialing during surveys. Also, the Senior Medical Officer for the Office of Quality and Performance from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs describes how that agency accomplishes uniform and effective credentialing across their nationwide system of hospitals.
