Program Description
The Joint Commission’s Patient-Centered Communication standards were approved in December 2009 and released to the field in January 2010. The standards are now published in the 2011 Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH).
Joint Commission surveyors began evaluating compliance with the Patient-Centered Communication standards on January 1, 2011; however, findings will not affect the accreditation decision until January 2012, at the earliest.
The JCRQSN broadcast in January 2011 introduced the Patient-Centered Communication standards. Building on that introduction, this 60-minute program focuses on how patient-centered communication can be achieved or enhanced in the hospital setting through the use of a performance improvement approach. The broadcast also provides examples of common communication scenarios and describes how they can be made more patient-centered.
