Program Description:
Providing a safe, functional, and effective environment of care (EC) is crucial to achieving good patient care outcomes. With the increased emphasis of safety in healthcare, the responsibilities of direct care staff and environment of care staff overlap, requiring that all staff must work together to improve the safety of healthcare delivery. Leaders must create an organization-wide culture that fosters safe delivery of care, and managers at all levels must extend and reinforce that culture within their departments and services. In addition, the Environment of Care chapter in The Joint Commission’s Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH) focuses on how everyone in the organization should participate in activities that make the care environment safe.
Through in-depth expert panel discussion and featured case studies, this 60-minute live activity - broadcast directly from The Joint Commission’s headquarters in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois - analyzes the staff’s role in environment of care issues, emphasizing a back-to-basics approach. The most common compliance issues related to life safety are also identified.

This activity is relevant to all organization staff, medical staff, volunteers, and contract staff, particularly those responsible for life safety-related activities, including safety officers and committees, engineering staff, department managers and supervisors, performance improvement staff, training and education staff, and risk managers.
