Program Description:
Recent disasters have made it clear that it is not enough for healthcare organizations to plan for individual emergency events. Instead, organizations committed to serving their communities must demonstrate the ability to respond to combinations of escalating events.

The Emergency Management standards represent an important evolution in the concept of managing emergencies. This program helps healthcare organizations to be prepared to respond to most disasters. It also provides information on how to examine existing emergency management strategies, identify areas for improvement within the four phases of preparedness, and provide advice on developing a comprehensive, proactive, and practical emergency management strategy.

Through expert panel discussion, case studies, and personal accounts, this 60-minute activity examines existing emergency management strategies, identifies areas for improvement, and provides advice on developing a comprehensive, proactive, and practical emergency management strategy.

Target Audience
This activity is relevant to all hospital and medical staff, particularly those responsible for life safety-related activities, including safety officers and committees, emergency care providers, engineering staff, performance improvement staff, and risk managers.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify the standards in the Emergency Management chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH).
  • Describe the purpose and means for conducting a Hazard Vulnerability Analysis.
  • Discuss the role of the hospital in the four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • Identify key components of effective emergency management strategies.
