Program Description
Effective January 1, 2012, Joint Commission accredited hospitals now are required to meet a new performance improvement requirement, standard PI.02.01.03 element of performance 1, that establishes an 85% composite compliance target rate for performance on ORYX accountability measures.
In order to help hospitals prepare for performance measurement in the new healthcare environment, The Joint Commission categorized its performance measures into accountability and non-accountability measures. This approach places more emphasis on an organization’s performance on accountability measures – quality measures that meet four criteria (Research, Proximity, Accuracy, and Adverse Events) designed to identify measures that produce the greatest positive impact on patient outcomes when hospitals demonstrate improvement.
Fortunately, a number of measures that meet all four accountability criteria exist now. Eliminating measures that do not pass these accountability tests and replacing them with ones that do will reduce unproductive work, enhance the credibility of the program, and ultimately increase the positive effect that all these programs will have on health outcomes for patients.
Target Audience
This activity is relevant to the entire hospital and medical staff, particularly organization leaders, managers and supervisors, and staff responsible for performance improvement, patient safety, and risk management initiatives.
