Joint Commission Resources Quality and Safety Network
Program Description
In 2011, there was unprecedented flooding, rampant earthquakes, disturbing volcanic eruptions, and a tsunami in Japan. One of the most striking images of destruction was a tornado’s decimation of St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri.  These disasters made it clear that it is not enough for healthcare organizations to plan for individual emergency events. Instead, organizations committed to serving their communities must demonstrate the ability to respond to combinations of escalating events.

This program presents an update on emergency preparation. Through expert panel discussion, case studies, and personal accounts, this 60-minute activity presents a case study on the impact of an EF5 tornado on St. Joplin’s Regional Medical Center’s facility, the evacuation process, and lessons learned.  Information on the post-event response of The Joint Commission, including the commissioning process, as well as an illustration of the survey process from a Joint Commission Surveyor, will also be presented.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify the standards in the Emergency Management chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH).
  • Identify key components of effective emergency management strategies.
  • Describe what happens during The Joint Commission’s on-site follow-up visits, including the commissioning process post-event.
  • Understand emergency management standards compliance and the survey experience from a Joint Commission surveyor’s perspective.

Target Audience
This activity is relevant to all hospital and medical staff, particularly those responsible for life safety‐related activities, including safety officers and committees, emergency care providers, engineering staff, performance improvement staff, and risk managers.
