With an increased emphasis on patient safety and emergency management, the responsibilities of staff involved in the Environment of Care (EC) and those involved in direct patient care overlap. With the recognition that EC is crucial to successful delivery of care, more leaders are educating employees about EC processes and using a team approach to share EC responsibilities.

The Environment of Care Chapter in The Joint Commission’s CAMH focuses on how everyone in the organization should participate in activities that make the care environment safe. The standards require organizations to establish plans and identify key individuals for managing the EC; identify physical risks to which the organization is susceptible and establish activities to minimize these risks; train staff to implement these activities; and monitor the effectiveness of these activities and implement improvements.

Through in-depth expert discussion and featured case studies, this 60-minute live activity analyzes the staff’s role in EC issues. The most common compliance issues related to life safety are also identified.

After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify key Joint Commission requirements that relate to the EC and strategies for achieving compliance.
  • Identify problematic EC standards and strategies for achieving compliance, with an emphasis on issues related to Interim Life Safety Measures.
  • Discuss ways to streamline processes and procedures to avoid duplication of efforts and encourage cooperation between direct care staff and EC staff, using the example of a flu prevention campaign.

Target Audience
This activity is relevant to all organization staff, medical staff, volunteers, and contract staff, particularly those responsible for life safety-related activities, including safety officers and committees, engineering staff, department managers, supervisors, performance improvement staff, training and education staff, and risk managers.
