Many will be exposed over the course of their lives to at least one natural or man-made disaster. But the impact of these, and many disasters, can be sharply reduced if we make an effort to assess risk, develop and test contingency plans, and respond to a disaster before it happens, rather than after the damage has been done.
Through expert panel discussion, case studies, and personal accounts, this 60-minute activity will examine existing emergency management strategies, identify areas for improvement, and provide advice on developing a comprehensive, proactive, and practical emergency management strategy.
Target Audience
This activity is relevant to all hospital and medical staff, particularly those responsible for life safety-related activities, including safety officers and committees, emergency care providers, engineering staff, performance improvement staff, and risk managers.
Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Identify the standards applicable to emergency management for hospitals.
- Describe the purpose and means for conducting a Hazard Vulnerability Analysis.
- Discuss the six critical functions of emergency management: communication, resources and assets, safety and security, staff responsibilities, utilities management, and patient clinical and support services.
- Identify key components of effective emergency management strategies.
