The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every year there are approximately 1.7 million new cases of infections acquired by patients during their stay in hospitals. Of these, approximately 99,000 result in death (although there may be other factors besides infection), making healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) one of the top 10 causes of death in the United States. From a business perspective, this translates into a cost of approximately $4.5 to $6.5 billion a year for hospitals to combat these infections.
Reducing the risk of HAIs is the responsibility of all staff within a healthcare organization—this includes both direct and indirect patient care staff. The challenge requires the prevention of infections that can be acquired in a healthcare organization and those introduced to the organization by patients and visitors.
During this 60-minute live activity, expert faculty examine the impact of infections on healthcare delivery systems and the implementation of strategies that can reduce or prevent the spread of infections.
